League to change name

The league have unanimously approved a motion by the executive committee to change the name of the league
From 1st July 2022, the league will become: SATURDAY MORNING AMATEUR FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION
The change was made as the title “STRATHCLYDE” was a blast from a previous era and did not reflect the membership
A new domain name has also been secured for our website, and we will be seeking to further develop our website along with wesoccer

New Clubs admitted

At a special general meeting of the leagues manage ment committee, a total of 12 new clubs were admitted for next season, with moving from other leagues, and totally new clubs
This is quite an achievement at this time of year, and shows the growth again in Saturday morning football, and the desire to join one of the biggest leagues in Scotland
We are also still attracting further applications, and will continue to be open for brand new clubs, but the deadline for clubs to move leagues has now past

Clubs joining from other leagues are SINGER, CLYDESIDE ATHLETIC, MOTHERWELL ATHLETIC, LA RONDE, NEWMAINS HAMMERS, NORTH KELVIN UNITED & EASTEND TOWER

Brand new clubs are TORYGLEN THISTLE, INTER GLASGOW, MILNGAVIE FC, STRATHAVEN DYNAMO, LANARKSHIRE THISTLE

Sadly, New Stevenston Celtic have decided to move to another league for next season, and we have also sadly lost a couple of clubs recently.

Jags too prickly for United

Maryhill Thistle became the 21-22 PH Decor Presidents cup winners on Friday 26th November with a hard fought 3-1 victory over Tannochside United
Tannochside were the better team for long periods of the first half and yet against the run of play Thistle grabbed the lead on 30 mins.
The second half started very closely fought, but as Tannochside pushed hard for an equaliser, the inevitable gaps appeared and Thistle were ruthless in converting two more.
A late consolation penalty for Tannochside finished the scoring, on what was a very windy evening thta did little tio help the players. Another good crowd watched on as Paddy from PH Decor presented the trophy to the victorious Maryhill team.

United DRUM up cup victory

Drumchapel United won their first silverware as a new SSMAFL side with a well deserved 4 – 2 victory in the Cutting Edge Engravers Champions Cup final last night at New Western Park against East Dunbartonshire.
Frum dominated for most of the first half and deservedly pulled into a 2 nil lead, and right on the stroke of half time ED missed a great chance to half the deficit. Second hald, ED were much improved but in surging for a rally, a few gaps appeared at the back and Drum scored another brace to surely tie the game up at 4 nil. This somehow spurred ED into action and 2 quick goals halved the deficit. There were more moments of drama as ED rushed forward, but Frum saw it out. Sadly, two red cards were a symbol of desire to win that overspilled, but the final whistle went with no more issues.
Pictures below are the victorious teammembers and alsoJirdan Penny, who picked uo the man of the match award.

League launch appeal to help young Chad

The league have launched an appeal to its clubs to help 5year old Chad Jones. East Kilbride born Chad has been diagnosed with Ewings cancer, and sadly it has only a 50-50 chance of survival. With this happening just 7 weeks from Christmas, and with Chad having relatives in the league, we seek to raise some funds for Chad and his family to help them through such an awful trauma.
The league will be donating their charity takings from some Cup final gate receipts but have also asked the member clubs to help.
Match Secretary Craig Burton said, “This is the very sort of event that we choose to support with our league charity fundraising, but this wee guy needs our help, so we decided to ask our clubs to help. We strive as a league to not only support our sport, but help those in need that have an affiliation to us”.
Clubs are asked to make donations to the league directly, who will then transfer the funds as a whole from the SSMAFL Family.
Craig also advised that the leagues referees were also contributing to the cause, and we thank them as well.#ssmafltotalfamily

Fireworks light up St Peters victory

St Peter’s certainly had the sparklers out as they rocketed to a fireworks night Cutting Edge Engravers Challenge Cup final victory with a 2 – 1 win against Uddingston at New Western Park.
Players had to endure a mass of explosive noise from the surrounding area, but St Peters settled quicker and were probably doing Catherine wheels of delight when they went ahead after 10 mins, and held that lead until half time.
In a tight battle,Uddingston started well in the 2nd period, and 15 mins in were level with a decisive finish from the penalty spot. But then a banger of a goal just 5 mins later put St Peter’s back in front with 25 still to play.
Uddingston pressed for an equaliser but whilst they were thwarted, it left a few gaps for St Peter’s to exploit but could not extend their lead, and survived a few flutters in the dying minutes, but held strong to pick up the trophy.
Not bad for a club in its first competitive season after the pandemic.
Goals from David Taylor and Anton Calderwood. Anton also picked up the man of the match award decided upon by the match officials and is pictured below.

ED battle thru duel in the sun

East Dunbartonshire picked up their first cup with victory in the KASTLE DECOR STRATHCLYDE CUP 2019-20 on Saturday 28th August 2021 with a 3-1 win against fellow premiership rivals Glasgow South after extra time.
South took the lead early in the second half after a goal-less first 45, with ED squaring things mid way thru.
So, in the falling sunshine, the game went into extra time, with ED scoring twice more to secure victory
South will be gutted to again finish runners-up in a cup for the 2019-20 season, but we are sure that they will be challenging again this season
Congrats to Gordon Moore and all at East Dunbartonshire, and thanks to our hosts at New Tinto Park, home of Benburb FC

Massive thanks to Tommy Lyon of Kastle Decor for their continued sponsorship, along with Kelvin Smith for supplying our match balls
